 Heritage

We can each play a role in helping to preserve the rich heritage of St. Margaret's Bay.

There are homes, sites, and buildings throughout the Bay that could benefit from heritage designation and protection. If you are considering having your home, a local church, or another site designated as a 'heritage property', there are a number of resources to help.

As a first step, the Heritage section of the Provincial Government's Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage is a good place to start. You can learn more about registering a heritage property, developing a heritage conservation district and financial assistance that might be available.  Information specific to Heritage Properties is available here, as is information on heritage funding programs.

The Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia can also be a very helpful contact - it is a membership-driven organization that advocates for heritage issues as well as offering lectures and workshops for those with an interest in heritage properties. Ther Heritage Trust site also provides a helpful list of available links and resources.

Strength in Community

If a group of people in your area have an interest in a particular subject or area, you can form a group to share ideas and concerns. Working together, you're also likely to have more of an impact.

As an example, The Pioneer Cemetery Heritage Society of St. Margaret's Bay is a local group that has come together for a common cause and a shared interest in preserving an historic cemetery in French Village, NS. There are many other sites across the Bay that warrant this level of interest and effort, to ensure that together we work to protect the shared history and heritage of our people and places.

Heritage properties, and places of historic significance, are more than just 'bricks and mortar' - it is through these sites and structures that we are able to share our community memories, our stories, and our traditions, and to provide linkages from one generation to the next.
